Construction 101: Forming

Forming is a construction method in which concrete is poured into a form. It is the next step in the construction process after the excavation is complete.

For a low-rise, the carpenters are responsible for forming the footings, which are the support base and footprint of a home. The carpenters form the footings and then pour concrete inside of those forms. Once the concrete is poured and dried, the forming contractor forms for the basement walls.

Usually the whole process of forming the footings can take one day. At Kingmeadow for example, we form the footings in the mornings and then the building inspector checks the soil conditions for the footing to make sure that there isn’t any water or any debris and that the ground is suitable to pour concrete. We then pour the concrete in the afternoon.

We use a concrete pump truck to pour the concrete, level it off and then let it dry for about a day. Next we strip the form of the footing which is called stripping, then afterwards we start forming the basement walls.

Forming the basement walls is a three day process. It takes one day to form and then we pour on the following day. On the third day we strip those forms, back-fill, and then start the forming. After we strip the building inspector returns to make sure that the walls are okay and that there are no stones around the footing. When he gives us the go ahead, we start the framing.

Forming is a simple and straight-forward process. The only challenge we ever encounter is during rainy or snowy days when we have to make sure that the footings are free of debris. On really cold days we have to prevent the soil for the footing from freezing so we keep it heated using straw. We spread straw on top of the footing before we pour it so that it doesn’t freeze.
