88’s ‘Breakfast with Your Neighbors’ Event Was a Great Success!

Minto 88 Homeowners got up bright and early this past Saturday morning to enjoy a gourmet breakfast, meet their neighbours and have the opportunity to chat with the Minto team of experts!  The event took place in 88’s stunning party room, and what better way to congratulate the purchasers for their new home, then to invite them to one of their very own beautiful amenity spaces!

Paul Martin, our Manager of Performance Audit & Condominium Operations, opened up the event with a warm welcome and he, along with Minto experts from our Construction department, Master Care Department, and Sales Department, provided some important details regarding the building’s Construction, Green features, and Mastercare related items! The Experts wandered through the crowd to answer any of the resident’s questions about their suite and building.20151128_093736_resized

The Minto team was extremely excited to meet our homeowners, hear their feedback and host them in the newly finished party room!

We were also thrilled to show off the completed time-lapse video showing construction of 88 from 2013 to today. For the last 2 years we had a camera set up to take a photo of the construction site every 10 minutes to compile this beautiful video of our progress. It is quite amazing and something we are very proud of.

Thank you to all those who attended our event! We hope that everyone enjoyed the great food, had a chance to meet a new neighbour, and had their building questions answered.  What a great way to celebrate with our wonderful new homeowners! Take a look at our stunning Party Room!

Last Saturday, we welcomed our very resident, Roberto, to his new home at 88 with a welcome basket from Minto. He was ecstatic to take possession of his new condo and to receive such a warm greeting from the Move-In team. He can’t wait to be all set-up in his new condo at Yonge and Sheppard. Thanks for being our first move-in Roberto! You are the first one to call this amazing new building home!

88 winter update

88 Sheppard (2014-01-28) Aerial (SE)

It’s been a while since we last had an update from 88 but we’ve been making lots of great progress. Check out the photos below to see what we’ve been up to lately.

We’re finishing the concrete pouring on the P2 level.

We’re also pouring concrete on the ground floor.

We’ve started installing the rebar for the ground floor wall.

The photo above shows the concrete columns for the party room on the ground floor. In winter there’s a high possibility of the columns freezing, so we wrap some tarps around the columns and then we pump heat into the tarp so that the concrete columns don’t freeze. We keep doing this until the weather warms up.

As you can see from the photos, we’re working through the cold weather and looking forward to even more progress as spring approaches. We’ll have another update for you in a few weeks.

A conversation with North America’s number one Feng Shui Master

At our Chinese New Year celebration event at Minto30Roe last week, we brought in the renowned Feng Shui master and Geomancer Paul Ng to make some predictions about the New Year. Paul was the perfect person to host the event thanks to his immense experience in the field. He has advised many notable dignitaries on the subject of Geomancy including the Governor of Hiltago, Mexico and the Mayor of Kingston, Jamaica. He has even received the Canada Federal award for his many contributions to the Canadian Society and the Canada Day Achievement Award.

Paul has also worked with us on the design of 88 and he even named the project! We caught up with Paul to discuss his work, how he came up with 88’s name, and what we can expect from the Year of the Horse. Continue reading A conversation with North America’s number one Feng Shui Master

Introducing Minto 88’s unique water feature

88 - WaterGarden_M
Among all of the amazing amenities at 88, the water feature is probably our favourite. Believe us when we say that it is truly unique. But don’t take our word for it, NAK Design Group who created the water feature, can explain why in more detail.

Can you describe the water feature you’ve designed for 88? What in particular makes it unique or different from other features you’ve created?

The overall design intent of the courtyard was focused on creating an urban oasis for the residents of the condo. Water was used as a main feature of the courtyard and helps to divide the amenity space into several rest areas or outdoor ‘rooms’. Natural stone pathways and buffer planting between the townhomes and condo tower help to create privacy, and provide interesting views from the private terraces. The style of this water feature is unique to its urban context with its combination of natural elements and sleek contemporary style. Natural elements such as the deep charcoal coloured granite patio surfaces, and untreated wood decks surround the water feature to create its contemporary form. Another unique feature of this design is that it not only aesthetically pleasing, but it also serves a functional purpose of holding rain water on site; which was an important contribution to achieving a sustainable landscape design as a whole.

WaterGarden 1_LR

Can you talk about the design process behind creating the water feature? What was your inspiration for it and how does it fit in with the theme and brand that Minto had developed for 88?

The inspiration came from a previous landscape design completed by NAK Design Group in 2010 at ‘Minto Spring’ where the design intent was to create a private oasis which resembled the Muskoka’s. 88 Sheppard adds a unique modern twist to that concept with the sleek, contemporary styling and use of high-end finishes which responds to the architecture of the condo and surrounding urban context and demographic.

For accessibility purposes, and also to maintain a sleek aesthetic, it was important that the surrounding patios and planted island which make up the water feature edges were all one level. This posed a design challenge because of the vast soil volumes required to sustain the proposed trees and planting within the water feature. To achieve this, we worked with the architect and structural engineers to lower the garage slab locally within the water feature area, and to design a series of walls and structural supports for the surrounding decks and planters.

Amenity Plan2_M

Can you provide any interesting stats or facts about the water feature?

The water feature was designed to comply with the Toronto Green Standards and retain 50% of the total average annual rainfall depth for reuse on site. The water feature is designed to have a 40mm Freeboard; which allows the water feature to receive a certain amount of “rain water” prior to the water level rising to the feature’s overflow pipe. Any overflow will be stored in a storage tank located in the underground garage below, where it will be re-used on site for day to day use.

The water feature maintains its water level via a makeup water sensor and controller which tops up the water level with the automatic addition of potable fresh water separated from the building water domestic supply.

The water feature system is intended as a “reflection pool” with a maximum depth of 500mm.There are 3 spray nozzle features at the south-west corner which also help to aerate the water and keep the water feature clean. The fountain controller system operates the water features filtration and water treatment system as well as the energy efficient LED lighting within the feature.
