Neighbourhood Roots: The History of Fort York

As you may have seen if you’ve visited the Minto Westside site, we’re located right across the street from Fort York. There is fascinating history surrounding this unique site, and what better way to get to know your future neighbourhood than to learn about its historical roots!

Fort York View from Minto Westside

The site itself is made up of military fortifications and related buildings. Inside the buildings, you will find Canada’s largest collection of original War of 1812 buildings, and it was the site of the battle of 1813.

Fort York was built by the British Army and Canadian military troops in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its purpose was to defend the settlement and the new capital of Upper Canada, “York” (what is now Toronto), from the threat of a military attack from the newly independent United States. During the early years of our city’s history, Fort York played a significant role in the economic and social development of the community.

Fort York saw a lot of action during the War of 1812, when the Americans declared war on Canada and invaded. In 1813 the Americans attacked Fort York twice, burning down many of the barracks and buildings. Shortly afterwards, the Fort was rebuilt into the structure that remains today.

Fort York was designated as a ‘National Historic Site of Canada’ in 1923.  On Victoria Day 1934, Fort York opened as a historic site museum. The City of Toronto designated the site, along with the nearby Fort York Armory, as a Heritage Conservation District in 1985.

Today, Fort York is conveniently open year-round and offers a fantastic opportunity to take part in tours, exhibits, and seasonal demonstrations. During the warmer months, the site is busy with ceremonies of the Fort Guard. The fort houses various exhibits, such as restored period rooms and traditional museum galleries, and the site hosts arts and cultural festivals on it’s grounds as well.

Take A Look At What’s Happening at Westside – Construction Update!

The Minto Westside team reached a very important construction milestone onsite this week – they erected the first tower crane! This is always an exciting time as it means that the concrete structure work will soon be getting underway! This crane is the first of 4 in total that will be required to construct the complete underground garage and the towers above, until September.

Building the final exit Ramp at the NE corner of the site

In early Fall, construction will be full steam ahead with the pouring of the first footings.  The team closely monitors and adjusts their process to ensure that they can get as much of the slab-on-grade poured before the winter arrives. It’s hard to imagine that winter is just around the corner with this beautiful warm weather outside, but the Minto team is always looking ahead to optimize activity onsite to expedite work!

Hoisting the Operators Cab

In the meantime, the start of foundation work has begun. The excavation and shoring trades are working on the North end of the site. Their work includes the installation of the last few tiebacks that act to retain the shoring system, as well as building the final exit ramp at the north end of the site.

Crane Tower Mast Erected and Prepped for Turntable & Boom Sections

This should be in place by mid next week, at which time removal of the ramp currently positioned at the middle of the site off Bathurst Street will commence. This will really open up the site and allow us maximum opportunity to continue the efficient pace of work that we have been able to take advantage of to date.

Sounds exciting, the site is sure busy with activity! A very special thank you to Keri Washer, Senior Project Manager for Minto Westside, for keeping us in the loop and always providing us with much anticipated construction updates!

Meet Diogo, Our Online Sales Rep

If you’ve visited any of our communities on Minto.com, then you may have already met Diogo, our Online Sales Representative! Diogo is often the first person that our prospective purchasers connect with before moving on to meet with our on-site Sales Reps.  Diogo helps our home buyers narrow down the community and home-type they are looking for and then connects them with an on-site Sales Rep so they can better assist with all the project details. You can find him by clicking the Chat Live button on the bottom right corner of all our active, for-sale, communities in the GTA.

We sat down with Diogo to learn more about him and his role at Minto. He has great insight on the all of our developments and shared some personal details about what makes him the perfect fit for this exciting role!

Hi Diogo! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Well, I’ve been working for the past 7 years as a manager for various retail stores – I love interacting with people and helping them pick out the perfect item. During that time, I’ve managed to continue studying on a part-time basis, obtaining both a Marketing and Management diploma, and my Real Estate License. All of these certifications have helped me understand and work in my current role from a different perspective. When I’m not studying or working, I enjoy travelling to new destinations, eating at new restaurants, and playing all types of sports.

What motivates you?

Challenges motivate me. The more challenging the project, the more I want to be successful in getting it finished.

What made you want to get into sales?

When I was 5, I would often tell my mom that I was going to sell her home-made bread because all of the kids in the neighbourhood loved it. One day, I set up a table outside our home, but before my mom could hand me the bread I would panic and say, “I’m nervous… I’m nervous…”. Needless to say, I didn’t close many deals back then. As I got older I thought back to that story many times and have worked hard to overcome my nerves and focus on becoming successful at sales. I fostered my talents in the retail market and am now ecstatic about my transition into real estate.  I’ve always been interested in real estate and working at Minto has allowed me to continue pursuing my passion.

What are some of the most common questions you get?

Most often the first questions I get from prospective buyers are “Can I get a Price List?” and “What is the occupancy date?”. I’m the first point of contact for our customers and they’re often looking for some information prior to entering our sales office. They need to be sure if the community being sold fits their budget and time frame.

Do you have a favorite project right now?

My favourite project is definitely Minto Westside. Situated within walking distance from the best the city has to offer, yet close to major highways and public transit  is what attracts me. The incredible amenities included in the building are just an added bonus.

Minto Westside

What is your advice to people who are just beginning the search for a new home online?

The potential purchasers that I speak to are typically in the early stages of buying a home; especially when they are browsing online. My advice to them is to make sure you are qualified first and that you are aware of the true cost of home ownership. Next, I would suggest having a sales rep assist in the buying process. Sales reps will offer their services free of charge to the buyer, and they are able to provide invaluable guidance to help with your decision.

Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us Diogo! If you want to get expert advice from Diogo, you can find him online on our Minto Westside, Minto Yorkville Park, and Kingmeadow websites.

The Best Moments from the #WestsideTO Block Party

There’s nothing like a summer evening enjoying the best of the Westside neighbourhood, and that’s exactly what we did last week at the Minto Westside Block Party!

Our Block Party was the kick off to the new Westside Market that we’ll be hosting on site every day until the fall with our friends at Scadding Court Community Centre. We were joined by some amazing local vendors, the best food in the city and some musical talent to jump start this new initiative and welcome our neighbours to explore what the area has to offer.

The array of cuisines illustrated just how vibrant the #WestsideTO neighbourhood is. We sampled octopus balls from Mr. Gushi Japanese Streetfood, fresh burrata from CheeseWerks, Dishum Dishum Indian Street Food’s delicious dishes, hot and fresh Choco Churros and much more.

We also had special appearances from Team Canada Pan Am Games athletes Sasha Gollish and Mandy Bujold, who posed for photos with fans.

“We wanted to start building the community now and using the space that we have before we start construction,” says Diane Wallace, Director of Marketing, Minto. “It was a wonderful evening packed with food, shops and entertainment all to celebrate the neighbourhood and introduce people to the Westside Market. We’re so happy that so many vendors and the Farmer’s Market will continue to be on-site energizing the area daily.”

If you missed us last week, stop by and check out the mix of local vendors on site who will have their unique selection of handmade goods, art and more such as The Drift Collective, The Nrth, Cedar Basket Gift Shop, Elle Mair Co and Rob Croxford. It’s a great way to discover some new Toronto talent and shop local!
